Most of you at one time or another has experienced or endured hostility and humility from bigoted people because you were gay, lesbian or transgender. Some of you have been physically assaulted, raped and called names during your young years by so called friends and classmates. Many of us have been in situations where survival was a priority regardless of personal safety. This has been the way of life for our community since the Stone Age. For many years we have been persecuted by heterosexuals because we did not conform to society’s rules as they interpreted them.
The Mathew Shepard Act has been implemented by our government to help prevent hate crimes against us. Here in North Carolina along with many states we now have an Anti-School Violence law that guarantees an education for our children regardless if a child is gay, lesbian or transgender. They now are able to attend a place of learning without harassment and having their milk money...
